How to Increase the Resolution of an Image in Picsart
Have you ever added a photo to a design and found it looks too tiny, blurry, or not clear enough? Once you know how to improve an image’s resolution, creating better-resolution designs will be much simpler.
Resolution is the photo’s detail level, influenced by focus, lens quality, and pixel count. For printing, consider size and print quality too. It can also refer to pixels in the image or print.

What is Image Resolution?
Image resolution is the number of pixels in a digital picture, and it’s important for designers to focus on this. If there aren’t enough pixels, the image will look blurry or low quality. Sometimes, you may need to change a small photo into a larger one by increasing its pixels, like from 200 × 200 to 1000 × 1000. While it’s challenging to fix a low-resolution image, it’s possible. To improve resolution, you need to understand two main terms: pixel dimensions (image size in pixels) and image resolution (pixels per inch)
What is Image Resolution Terminology?
Image Resolution Terminology relates to the important terms and ideas connected to the quality and sharpness of digital images. Understanding these terms is essential for anyone working with images, especially in design and photography. Here are some common terms associated with image resolution:
Pixel
The smallest unit of an image that can be displayed or edited. Images are made up of thousands or millions of these tiny squares.
Pixel Dimensions
The width and height of an image measured in pixels (e.g., 1920 × 1080), indicating its overall size.
Resolution
The amount of detail an image holds, usually measured in pixels per inch (PPI) for digital images or dots per inch (DPI) for printed images.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch)
A measurement of pixel density in a digital image, indicating how many pixels are packed into each inch. Higher PPI means more detail.
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
A measurement of print resolution, indicating how many dots of ink a printer will place in one inch. Higher DPI results in better print quality.
DPI (Dots Per Inch) vs PPI (Pixels Per Inch)
Regarding photo editing and design, terms like DPI (Dots Per Inch) and PPI (Pixels Per Inch) often come up. Let’s break down the differences between DPI and PPI:
DPI (Dots Per Inch)
DPI (Dots Per Inch) is a measure of print resolution, indicating how many dots of ink are printed per inch on a physical medium like paper. It is relevant when printing digital images, as it affects the sharpness and quality of the printed output. Higher DPI values result in finer detail and better print quality.
PPI (Pixels Per Inch)
PPI (Pixels Per Inch) refers to the pixel density of a digital image displayed on a screen. It indicates how many pixels are present per inch of the image, which directly affects the image’s resolution and clarity. A higher PPI means more pixels per inch, resulting in a sharper and more detailed image. For instance, a 300 PPI image will have finer details than a 72 PPI image.
Standard Resolution of Images
Many people think that web images should always be 72 PPI because of old beliefs about screen resolution, but this isn’t actually true. For images on screens, PPI doesn’t matter; what really counts is the pixel size (width and height). For example, a 200×200 pixel image will look exactly the same online whether it’s set to 72 PPI, 150 PPI, or even 300 PPI. A larger image, like 3000×2000 pixels at 72 PPI, will also print better than a smaller 300×200 image with the same PPI.
Most modern screens have resolutions higher than 100 PPI, not 72 PPI. For example, a 17-inch monitor might have a resolution of 800×600 pixels, and a 19-inch monitor might be 1024×768 pixels, with these settings usually being the best for those screen sizes.
When it comes to printing, some high-end printers may need images up to 600 PPI for the best results. Common printers like inkjet or laser typically print well at 200-300 PPI. For photographic prints, 300 PPI is ideal, while large posters can be printed at 150-300 PPI depending on how close people will be viewing them.
Highest Resolution Possible for Images
The difference between low and high resolution affects how clear or blurry an image looks. To get sharp, detailed prints or larger images, you need high resolution (more detail). Low-resolution images may look fine at their regular size, but when you zoom in, they can appear blurry or blocky because the individual pixels become visible.
High-resolution images have at least 300 pixels per inch (PPI), which is needed for quality printing and anything you want as a physical copy.
Resolution also helps you figure out how big you can print an image without losing quality. To calculate the maximum print size, divide the image’s total pixels by the resolution (usually 300 PPI). For example, if an image is 2,000 pixels wide, it can be printed at about 6 inches (2,000 divided by 300).
